What's Happening in West Tennessee

NEWS ALERT FOR DECEMBER & 2009

Beginning in December, we will procure, load and deliver that food to your Drop Site for distribution that Saturday Dec 13th, not the 20th. Deadline for orders will remain the same, December 8.

We firmly believe that the shorter waiting period will result in participation by thousands of new families (including a vastly higher number of Food Stamp recipients) who have simply been unable to budget for the delays built into the old process. In fact, a significant portion of the most economically at-risk families do not participate in the Angel Food program because they simply can't seem to get to a time when they can budget in a way that enables them to order and pay for food, then wait 10-14 days for that food to come in. It is in our heart to help see to it that no family in your community is dealing with food insecurity for one day longer than necessary... and certainly that no home would be left to deal with hunger during the Holidays! We look forward to hearing your praise reports about the benefits these changes bring to your Angel Food operations, and about the increase in the number of families your team is able to help in the coming months!

STATES AFFECTED : PA, OH, OK, NY, TN, NC, WV, VA, GA

Interfaith to offer discounted groceries

Mary Unger, Campus News, 10/28/08

The Interfaith Student Center is working with Angel Food Ministries to provide groceries for students and people in the community for almost half the price of average retail value.

Angel Food Ministries was founded by Emmanuel Praise Church in Monroe, Ga., in 1994 to provide food for friends and neighbors who were struggling financially. They now are helping provide food relief to more than 500,000 families each month.

Nancy Sonleitner, an Assistant Sociology professor at UTM, was the individual who turned to Jolinne Balentine-Downey, director of Interfaith Student Center, to seek a plan of action in an attempt to provide Weakley County with an easy affordable way to purchase food items.

No applications, qualifications, income restrictions, or minimums are necessary to purchase Angel Food, and there is no limit exists on the number of boxes that an individual or family may order each month. However, to better help people in need, Angel Food Ministries participates in the Food Stamp Program.

Angel Food is available in a quantity that can fit into a medium sized box at $30 per unit. Each month's menu is different from previous months and consists of both fresh and frozen items with an average retail value of about $60.

Orders can be made online at www.angelfoodministries.com from now until Friday, Nov. 7. Credit cards and food stamps (EBT) can be used through the Web site. You can also place an order at the Interfaith Student Center on Friday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Orders will be available for pick-up at the Interfaith Student Center on Saturday, November 22, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Bring a box, laundry basket or cooler to transport your groceries.

The Interfaith Student Center is located on the east side of the UTM campus at 312 Lovelace Ave.
